What is a domain name?

Domain names are readable addresses, eg. example.com, that web browsers and other internet software use to find things on the web. As an example, with the domain name example.com you can have a web page at https://www.example.com/ and use email addresses such as info@example.com.

Why get your own domain name?

Having your own domain gives a more professional and established impression. It helps establish a clear identity for your online prescence. You can use the domain name for your web site and email contacts in advertisements, business cards and other marketing materials and business communications.

It's easier to find you on the internet with a distinct domain name. Search engines give higher priority to web pages with their own domain name. Customers and suppliers are more likely to remember you if you link your online identity with your brand names.

Control your brand. With your own domain you get more control over online presentation. By linking your contact info to a name you control you can change service providers for web pages or email without losing your email addresses or breaking web links. Simply change the domain name to point at your new provider.

For more complex web sites you often want to link together different services under the same business identity. Often this requires linking the service with your domain name, which is accomplished by creating verification records under your domain name, eg. by creating a so called TXT record or CNAME alias to verify that you own the domain name. This allows you to link eg. service.example.com as the access point fo the service.

You can establish your local presence by using a country specific domain name extension such as .fi for Finland. This confirms you as a local business to the reader. Anyone who has a legal prescense as an organization or individual in Finland can register a .fi domain.

How do I pick my domain name?

Domain names have to be unique, but finding a good one isn't always easy. A good domain name has several characteristics: it should be short and readable so customers can remember it easily. Usually you would use your business or personal name, but if this is too long you can try to use abbreviations. Avoid making your domain too similar to other existing domain names to avoid unnecessary confusion. If you do business under several names or trademarks you can register several domains and point them at the same web site if desired.
